Laboratory Sorting Technician

Reporting to: Lab Supervisor

Primary Location:  CBL Beachin site - Sorting Laboratory 

Other Locations: Occasionally to CBL Heywood house site

Department:  Laboratories

Working Hours: 36 hours.

You will work under a system of rotating 8 hour shifts of either (i) 6am to 2pm, (ii) 2pm to 10pm or (iii) 10pm to 6am.

You will work according to the following pattern:

a.         6 shifts followed by 3 days off;

b.         4 shifts followed by 1 day off;

c.          2 shifts followed by 2 days off;

d.         2 shifts followed by 1 day off;

e.         4 shifts followed by 3 days off;

Type: Laboratory based work.

21 days holiday + 8 bank holiday replacements for the first year.

23 days holiday + 8 bank holiday replacements following 12 months service.

Main Purpose of Role:

Operation of production flow cytometry sorters, media preparation, semen assessment, processing and freezing. Record keeping and basic maintenance of production lab and flow cytometry equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

• At all times fully comply with CBL H&S directives, CBL Lab SOPs and policies to allow good laboratory practice and full compliance with the Regulations and Industry Standards.

• Operate autonomously though the different operations under his/her responsibility, respecting CBL lab SOPs, sexed production planning and CBL lab production standards (details on following points below).

•Ensure the CBL lab GxP on the flow cytometers operation and the sorting lab working area are observed and maintained.

• Ensure the CBL Lab GxP on media preparation, processing of semen samples and the working area are observed and maintained.

• Perform and act on the different controls during the sort and the sorters operation, media preparation, processing of semen samples and correct/report any deviation to the line manager

•  Maintain the workflow, manage the tasks and take care of the instruments, equipment and tools linked to the role.

• Effective collaboration with the rest of the lab team sharing knowledge and supporting colleagues to ensure the department maximises production and meets the business aims.

• Complete other duties as required from time to time.

Essential Skills and Attributes:

This role requires a high level of competency and technical capability with laboratory equipment and flow cytometry sorters. The individual must have had previous experience of flow cytometry or be able to demonstrate the ability to understand key semen sorting factors. They must have previous experience with sperm and AI biology or a biological aptitude and enjoy a commercial production environment. They will be required to work to high personal standards and accuracy, with good trouble-shooting and problem solving aptitudes, be methodical and organised and confident with IT interfaces and systems. Work well within a team but be willing to work autonomously and take individual responsibility.

- Production per sort head and sorter downtime.

- Production purity scores and QC.

- Microbiology control of media, processed sample, equipment and laboratory environment.

- Sample recovery and expected/produced ratio.

Due to business expansion a superb opportunity has arisen for an experienced livestock handler with a strong work ethic to join Cogent Breeding Ltd as a Stockperson. Within this busy role you will be part of the team responsible for the daily care of the pedigree breeding bulls at the stud in Cheshire.

Who will I be working with?

What will the role of Stockperson entail?

Reporting to the Livestock Manager, as a Stockperson you'll be responsible for all aspects of bull welfare for some of the best genetics in the world. Alongside providing the very best daily care, duties will also include getting involved with photographing, classification, parades and more. You'll be a hardworking team member who is able to take and follow instructions, ensuring personal and team safety while being alert to all situations that may occur.

Your duties will include although not be limited to;

  • Handling livestock daily and taking collections
  • Assisting with daily care i.e. cleaning, feeding, watering and all factors relating to maintenance and good health to ensure a clean and healthy environment
  • Consciously working to ensure company best practice and regulatory compliance
  • Ensuring that all health and safety responsibilities are fulfilled and that colleagues, visitors and contractors safety and welfare is maintained at all times
  • Applying and improving expertise by keeping up to date with specialist knowledge

What will I need to be considered for this Stockperson role?

  • Full UK driving licence. Plus Bobcat/Tractor experience would be preferable but full training will be provided.
  • Livestock free and bio-security conscious
  • Ability to work independently, and responsibly manage time
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude towards approaching and tackling challenges
  • Proactive approach and flexible with working hours and tasks

What will I receive in return?

Salary: Circa £24,000, level dependent on experience.

Attractive benefits: Housing allowance (no accommodation provided), annual leave entitlement of 21 days plus bank holidays, rising to 23 days plus bank holidays after 12 months, along with pension and life insurance.

Hours of work: Full time 5 days per week supporting a 7 day rota.

Tasks to include:

Building effective relationships with customers to deliver a service that meets their breeding requirements

Running an efficient service utilising Cogent's state-of-the-art heat detection system and whole herd management solution, to ensure accurate and timely artificial insemination of cattle

Taking responsibility for your customers fertility data and herd reports

Preparing reports and providing detailed action reports to customers and Team Leader
